Cultural Dresses and Wedding Ceremony of Gujarat

The traditional Gujarati attire consist of patola silk which also known as “queen of all the silks”. Brides often wear lehenga made out of silk. Even the normal sarees worn are of silk. And in Kutch the traditional outfit worn by women is known as Abha which is a long piece of blouse decorated with mirror work, while man in Kutch wear loose pants with short frock like coat. And during the festival of Navratri the most famous traditional outfit includes Chania choli, chunni, saree which is the traditional outfit for women and for men it is kediyu, dhoti, kurta. And as for jewellery women wear a silver jewellery, Kamar band, Nath. But now a days the culture of clothes has shifted from wearing saree, Chania choli to salwar kameez. 


In Gujarat it a tradition to distribute jaggery and coriander to the guest during the engagement ceremony after the rings are exchanged. An also the bride’s side of family gives the groom’s side of family gifts with lots of sweet. We all do wait for the wedding ceremonies since it’s the most beautiful thing to watch with variety of food served to the guest by the bride’s family. The wedding ceremony starts with vargodho that going from groom’s house to bride’s house. And when the groom’s family arrived, they are welcomed (swagtam) with a thali for puja. Later the bride’s father performance’s a ritual of giving his daughter to the groom’s family which is known as kanya daan.  Ganesh puja is also done to start the ceremony. And during this puja the couple performance mangl phera, in which they walk around the fire in a circle 7 times. The ceremony comes to end when the groom puts Mangal sutra around the bride’s neck and sindhur in the head. And then the bride goes to groom’s house to live rest of her life there.
