Exploring Cultural Diversity of Meghalaya

-By Ishika Mundhra

Meghalaya, also known as 'Abode of Clouds', is not only renowned for its breathtaking landscapes but also for its rich cultural heritage.

Meghalaya is primarily inhabited by indigenous tribes like Khasis, Garos, and Jaintias which have their own cultural identities. The Khasi tribe is the largest community in the state which is known for its matrilineal society, where lineage and inheritance are traced through the mother instead of father. The Garos have a patrilineal society and are renowned for their vibrant festivals and traditional music. The Jaintias, although smaller in number compared to other tribes, contribute significantly to the cultural diversity of the state.

The most famous festival in the state is the Nongkrem Dance is celebrated by the Khasi tribe to thank the Almighty for a bountiful harvest. The Wangala Festival, also known as the Hundred Drum Festival, is celebrated by the Garo community to mark the end of the agricultural season.

Music and dance are integral parts of Meghalaya's cultural heritage. The indigenous musical instruments such as the duitara (a type of string instrument), bamboo flutes, and drums are commonly used during festivals and cultural events. The state also has various dance forms like Lahoo dance, Dorsegata dance, Nongkrem dance and Wangala dance.

The cuisine of Meghalaya is diverse with each tribe contributing it. Staple foods include rice, maize, and various leafy vegetables, which are often cooked with indigenous spices and herbs. Pork is a popular meat dish among the Khasis and Garos, while fish and poultry are also widely consumed. Dishes like Jadoh (rice cooked with meat and spices), Dohneiiong (pork cooked with black sesame seeds), and Pumaloi (steamed rice cakes) are some of the traditional delicacies enjoyed by the people of Meghalaya.
